It’s been 31 years…

Geoff’s favourite team was in the grand final last weekend. Some places show the football from Australia, but we had just arrived in Beijing and didn’t know where to go to watch it (that we could take a tired baby and an only slightly less tired wife). He started out listening to the game over the internet in our hotel room:

Clearly Arlo was into it too.

Then, a few text messages to home later, Geoff was watching the game by Skyping with his brother-in-law in Sydney. The computer was set up in front of the TV and Geoff was happy. It was funny to hear Geoff and Paul say the occasional thing to each other – really as though they were sitting next to each other on the couch, rather than half a world away from each other. I was waiting for one of them to say, “I’m getting another beer, would you like one?”

Geoff was able to give Arlo an education in NRL, punctuated with the occasional, “Get out of the way, Max,” as Arlo’s cousin’s friend would get a little too close to the television back in Sydney.

The Dragons won, Geoff was happy, even if he couldn’t celebrate the win with other people who cared about the result.

By the way, this is the ensuite in our hotel room:

It DOES have a curtain you can pull across!!

  1. Hmmm, so does Geoff have to leave the country in order for the Dragons to win a competition ???

One good thing for us having you all so far away in China – we can’t hear Geoff rubbing it in – lol !

    • He’s actually been surprisingly good and hasn’t mentioned the win much at all. Maybe that’s because I don’t care much for the game. I do wish (for him) that he was back there to watch it with everyone else, though.

  2. I was hoping he would get to watch it!!! How wonderful is technology!!!!

I couldn’t give a toss about the game but am very happy for Geoff – and Arlo as she clearly enjoyed it too!!!

    • It was just sad that it was just us – we only arrived in Beijing that day and didn’t have time to source a big screen to watch the game on. Still, he saw it, and is very happy to have. And Arlo doesn’t really have much of a choice in which team she’ll support – she’s been told she’s a Dragons fan from day dot.

  3. Quite a unique way to watch the game. Looks like Dad has a willing companion. Arlo appears to be hooked on football already πŸ™‚
Who would think to use a glass wall for the bathroom? Someone who cares nothing for private moments apparently. Very strange. Yes, thank heavens for curtains!

    • You know the saying about necessity being the mother of invention… I’m not sure it was necessary to watch the game, but at least Geoff found a way to do it πŸ˜‰
